Self Tan Top Tips: How to Tan Your Face

You've self tanned your body and achieved that beachy golden glow, but you've forgotten one thing - your face!

Leaving out your face while self tanning is like leaving the house without your shoes; it doesn't look right and people are going to notice. Luckily, we've created this helpful guide that contains everything you need to know about self tanning your face, from preparation to removal.

1. Prep and prime

When it comes to self tanning, preparation is key. Just like when tanning the rest of your body, we recommend exfoliating your face the day before application. This removes any dead skin cells, leaving your skin silky smooth. Follow with your favourite moisturiser to stop your skin feeling dry.

When you're ready to apply your self tan, give your face a good cleanse. This removes any dirt and oil that could cause streaks or patches. After cleansing, try splashing your face with cold water to close your pores and tighten your skin for a flawless base.

2. Get your glow on

Now that your face is primed and ready, it's time to choose which self tan to go for. There's no real best self tan for your face, it's about what works for you.

Extra tip: The trick to a flawless sunless tan is to make sure there are no harsh lines that will give you away, so try and match the shade of your face with your neck and chest. That way, it'll all blend seamlessly and make you look as though you've been soaking up the sun.

Build it up

If you're all about the hassle-free tanning life and you've gone for a gradual tanner from our Everyday Range, use the same formula on your face to build up a natural-looking tan. Our Everyday Gradual Tanning Milk - Face is enriched with Aloe Vera, Vitamin E and Cocoa Butter to leave your face soft and glowing.

High impact

For those who prefer a darker, more dramatic tan, go for one of our lotion or foam self tanners that develop into the perfect bronze glow. Rub a small amount over your face in gentle, circular movements using an Application Mitt.

To really nail that natural look, grab a blending brush and buff the product into your skin. Pay extra attention to the area around your hairline and jaw where harsh lines could appear.

No commitment

Unsure about using self tan on your face? Our GLO Range of One Day Tans has got you covered.

Pick out your favourite product from the GLO range and apply to your body as normal. This high coverage instant tanner is perfect for when you're on the go. It doesn't need time to develop, and it can also be used on your face for the same flawless results. Either mix with your foundation or use alone for a stress-free sunkissed look that stays put all day and night, but washes off with soap and water.

Did you know that you can also use our GLO One Day Tans to contour your face? Apply to the hollows of your cheeks, jawline, forehead and even around your nose - all the places you'd usually apply bronzer. Grab your favourite blending brush and buff in for a seamlessly sculpted look.

3. Be patient

If you've used one of our self tans that develops into a deeper glow, there are a couple of things you can do to ensure a flawless finish. Immediately after you apply your self tan, try not to move your face too much.

We know this may sound like a difficult task, but moving your face before the product is fully dry may cause wrinkles in your beautifully applied tan. To combat this, try dusting some loose powder over your face to speed up the drying process.

Also, try not to touch your face as your tan develops to prevent smudges and streaks, and avoid pulling tight clothing over your head.

4. Topping up or toning down

Because your face is (generally) less covered up than the rest of your body, and if you have a rigorous skincare routine, you might find that the self tan on your face fades quicker than your body.

If your facial tan needs a little top-up, our Everyday Gradual Tanning Milk - Face is perfect for the job. You could also mix a little of the GLO Matte One Day Tan into your everyday foundation for an instant bronze boost.

If you'd like to remove self tan from your face, reach for your favourite exfoliator or body scrub and gently scrub the tan away. You could also try out our Self Tan Eraser, which cleanses and moisturises your skin as it removes even the longest-lasting of self tans.
